John I. Barney, DDS

A native of Portsmouth and a graduate of Churchland High School, Dr. Barney graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1975. Graduating first in his dental school class at the Medical College of Virginia, he then spent five years in the U.S. Army Dental Corp. The first year, he was chief resident in a General Practice Residency at Ft. Meade, MD, then spent four years of active duty in Bremerhaven, Germany, where he exclusively treated children at the U.S. Army Hospital.

After his experience in the Army, Dr. Barney decided not only to become a specialist in children’s dentistry but also to gain a specialty degree in orthodontics as well. He attained Chief Residency status at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania and finished both degrees in 1983.

Since that time, he has thoroughly enjoyed practicing both specialties at Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics, in part due to his “work family” – his loyal staff, which has been with him for a range of 10 to 28 years. “Having never really grown up myself, I/we still have fun at work every day and hope that our family of patients/parents share in the fun atmosphere.

Dr. Barney and his high school sweetheart, wife and best friend, Linda, have shared many experiences (and years), not to mention two great kids and now two “wild and crazy” grandkids.

Outside work, Dr. Barney is an avid cyclist and motorcyclist, usually combining the two with his bicycle on back of his motorcycle. He also enjoys photography and playing guitar and piano, and wishes he could sing, too!
